InVision Tampa

Using federal grant dollars, the City of Tampa launched InVision Tampa as the next step in its multipronged economic recovery strategy. This master plan and design study focused on the two-mile radius around the Center City and the Nebraska Transit Corridor to Hillsborough Avenue. The Leytham Group led the communications and community engagement for this project alongside a team of global planning experts and the City of Tampa.
We began the project with key stakeholder meetings and outreach to ensure we knew, among other things, how each stakeholder wished to be communicated with, where they themselves experienced the most effective results, and what important messages and issues they felt needed to be delivered and discussed. With that critical information included in our thought process, the communication and planning team developed a strong visual identity and positioning and extensively integrated strategies for outreach to grassroots and “grass tops” people as well as to traditionally disenfranchised citizens. Our plan included the use of traditional meetings and project materials as well as a robust online presence that included a central micro-site, a virtual town hall and various social outlets that could engage stakeholders, opinion leaders, residents and businesses at different points of entry and preference levels.
This broad-based community awareness, input and ongoing dialogue was overwhelmingly embraced. During the first phase of the project, more than 800 people attended community meetings and more than 1,000 social and online users have shared their opinions, thoughts and visions for Tampa. So popular and well received, InVision Tampa was continued to include additional outreach into other areas of the Center City and has become a model for future planning projects throughout the community.
